Background

Writing since the age of 8, Bonita Summers became a journalist and freelance writer/editor in her 20's and 30's, and an administrator at Queen’s University in her 40's. At midlife, she returned to her love of poetry, performing as a regular at Kingston, Ontario's ‘Poetry & Company’. Bonita produced a book, Woman with the Flying Mind, a self-published autobiography in poetry as inspiration for women overcoming abuse.


Woman with the Flying Mind has sold at ‘Fanfayr’ in Kingston, Ontario and at the ‘Kingston Women's Art Festival’ - both juried events - raising $1000 for Kingston Interval House. In 2006, Bonita participated in ‘Random Acts of Poetry’, emceed a Kingston Interval House concert, and helped to organize Kingston’s first dub poetry festival, ‘Reloading the Can(n)on’. Subsequently, she was invited to Toronto in May of 2007 to participate in the Dub Poetry Series put on by the Dub Poets’ Collective.

In 2007, she took on the administration of ‘Poetry & Company’. In June 2007, at Market Square in Kingston, Ontario, Bonita emceed the launch of ‘Scapes: Poetry & Company, A Kingston Community Anthology, in which her dub-inspired piece, Electronic Junkie, is featured.

In May 2008, Bonita became editor of in touch, the newsletter for the Therapeutic Touch Network of Ontario.

Currently, Bonita is writing a book about her life as a spiritual journey and finishing up her latest book of poetry, Digging Up the Bones.

                               
                                                                

Latest Work

The Wisdom of Old Souls is an anthology of poetry and prose dedicated to grandmothers. Editor Bonita Summers will be on hand, along with some of the 30 contributing authors at the July launch. Date and location to be announced.

Editor Bonita Summers and Richard Grove, publisher for Hidden Brook Press to be featured on Rogers TV, discussing the release of "The Wisdom of Old Souls", the anthology honouring grandmothers to be released by Hidden Brook Press in July.
